Happy Cinco de Mayo Austin! As Americans, we have wholeheartedly accepted this Mexican holiday as a day to relax, sit back and enjoy some margaritas. To be fair, margaritas are accepted year-round if you ask any Texan, but the 5th of May is the day we can all be sure it’s totally alright to indulge. After all, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere! (If Jimmy Buffet sings about it, it’s gotta be true.)
A brief history lesson here:
Many Americans generally confuse today as Mexico’s independence day, which is actually September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is observed in the United States as a celebration of thanks to Mexico in fending off French support for the Confederate States of America in the Civil War. The battle of Puebla, in Puebla Mexico against the French was won on this day.
In observance of this Mexican-American holiday, we wanted to share some of the festivities going on around Austin. We know it’s Monday, but what a better way to start the week! Cinco de Mayo Fiesta!| Midway Field House| 6pm
Enjoy some classic pulled pork quesadillas from Blue Ox BBQ, live music and special craft beer from Mexico! The event starts at 6 pm and will also be showing the NBA playoff game. Don’t miss it!
2nd Annual Cinco de Drinko!| Pelon’s Tex-Mex + 508 Tequila bar
Starting at 2pm, come enjoy music from DJ Danny Boy and a live Mariachi Band! Drink specials include $3 Margaritas with 508 Tequila bar’s in-house margarita mix. There will also be $1 street tacos, and don’t forget their unforgettable queso!
The Three Amigos Quote-Along| Alamo Drafthouse| May 8th
The Alamo Draft House is screening the candid and hilarious movie The Three Amigos, starring the iconic trio made up of Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short. There is not another more appropriate way to spend Cinco de Mayo. (Don’t forget the margarita!)
